Manteo is one of the most charming hidden gems in North Carolina. With the main part of the Outer Banks just across the bridge, there are endless activities to do.
I’d have to admit that Manteo is a breath of fresh air from the crowded areas like Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks during the summer. From historical landmarks to botanical gardens, here are the best things to do in Manteo.
What is Manteo Known For?
Manteo reminds us of the English settlers and the Native American Chief who became friends with the colonists.
His name was also Manteo!
But no historical evidence suggests of his whereabouts, which leads many to wonder if the legend of Roanoke Island is true. You can read up on the sudden disappearance of English settlers here.
As you explore the town of Manteo, you will definitely have no shortage of history. Manteo till this day has retained most of its unique buildings and landmarks despite the growing number of tourists visiting the area every year.

Best Things to Do in Manteo, NC
1. The Lost Colony
This theater should be a part of everyone’s itinerary when visiting the historic town. The Lost Colony Theater is one of the best entertainment centers on the Outer Banks.
Even though the mysteries surrounding The Lost Colony have yet to be solved, a group of talented actors puts on a stunning performance every summer to recreate the events from the late 1500s. Buy tickets here!
2. Elizabethan Gardens
Besides the calming atmosphere of Manteo’s botanical gardens, there are certain areas throughout the gardens with some history behind it. Towards the beginning of your journey in the gardens, there is a fairly huge statue of Elizabeth I.
This garden was specifically made for her enjoyment and has become a prominent attraction ever since.
You can decide to enter the garden and enjoy the scenery or embark on an audio tour to learn the in-depth history of The Lost Colony. It is recommended to check when the gardens are open.
If you’re lucky enough to visit around Christmas, you can witness the stunning Winter Lights that illuminates the gardens.
3. North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island
A whole new world is waiting to be discovered as you step foot into this top aquarium in North Carolina. Just a couple of miles away from Manteo, the North Carolina Aquarium use to be a resource center before opening it’s doors to tourists.
This aquarium is the perfect activity to do when the summer heat gets too tiring. I would also prepare to take some photos of awesome structures just outside the entrance.

4. Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse
This historic lighthouse is tucked into the small town of Manteo with a gorgeous boardwalk leading up to it on the Roanoke Sound.
The lighthouse is kind of hard to miss with the brightly colored red roof. Even though Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is small, the historical landmark is an important addition to Roanoke Island’s history.
There were other lighthouses similar that were built in the 1800’s but couldn’t withstand the lack of repairs. But this cottage-style lighthouse is the current replica of the third lighthouse that was built for the fishermen.
5. Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
Manteo is here to offer more ways to soak in nature and Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge is the best place for it.
In the refuge, there are black bears, alligators, and even red wolves. If you find yourself with extra time, take a hike or kayak the wetlands.

6. Fort Raleigh National Historic Site
