A Perfect Day Trip to Maymont Park in Virginia
Maymont may not be on everyone’s radar, but if you’re interested in Japanese or Italian gardens, keep reading!
The park is located in Richmond, Virginia; however, Maymont is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Here is a short guide to a perfect day trip to Maymont Park in Virginia!
Background of Maymont
Maymont Park is not only a park but is also an estate with Victorian architecture dating back to 1886. Sally Dooley led the efforts to form a place that would easily rival other estates.
When the Dooleys passed away in the early 1900s, they left no money or heirs to help maintain the landscape.
Today, Maymont Park and Estate are now supported by private donations and public support. If you want more history about how the estate was formed, read more here.
Maymont Gardens
To plan out your visit to Maymont where you’ll find some of the most beautiful gardens on the east coast, make sure to visit during the prime seasons when the gardens are in bloom.
All gardens are free to visit and vary in hours depending on the time of year.
The gardens offered are the Japanese, Italian, specialty gardens, and the Arboretum.
Historic Estate
Besides the gardens, a beautiful Mansion and carriage collection keeps the history alive. In the mansion, guests get an exclusive look at the world where the Dooleys lived.
The mansion is now open for tours by making a reservation in advance.
You can also admire the outside of the mansion and the other historical buildings throughout Maymont.
Wildlife Exhibits
Of course one can’t enjoy nature without animals. Maymont is also home to wildlife that is especially popular amongst children.
With the farm, the Robin Center, and wildlife habitats, guests can see a variety of animals. Check out this page for more!
