1. Visit the Acropolis
Architecture that never fails to reveal hidden secrets of the past, the Acropolis is one of the most notorious places on earth.
A place that even today helps us easily imagine the Greek gods spending time there.
Here are some helpful tips for a smooth experience at the Acropolis:
- Book tickets online to skip the long lines
- Show up at 8:00 am to avoid heavy crowds
- Wear comfortable shoes and clothes
- Bring water bottles to stay hydrated
- Be prepared for some intense climbing
2. Visit Famous Museums
Athens holds a ton of artifacts from earlier civilizations, so it would be a mistake not to visit at least one of the museums mentioned in this post. The two museums that I recommend are the Acropolis and the Archeological Museum.
They are both rather similar in content but the archeological museum has Egyptian and other civilizations as well.
The Acropolis Museum is more famous in that it’s often placed with a trip to the Acropolis. If you are also looking for a short break in between, there is a small cafe located inside.
3. Visit Monastiraki Square
Monastiraki Square is a Middle Eastern lover’s dream. If you already didn’t feel the intertwining of cultures, Monastiraki is the place where you’ll find it all.
As a tourist, I would be a little wary that you don’t end up being scammed or pickpocketed as it’s really common in certain areas.
The way to get to the square is via taxi or metro if you don’t stay nearby. You have to try out the local restaurants and shops to get the most of Monastriaki.
4. Delphi Ruins
Delphi is a little bit off the beaten path and not many people travel to this breathtaking attraction.
Even though the Delphi ruins are located three hours outside of Athens, the tour buses make the long drive so you don’t have to find a taxi.
The village of Delphi is truly a place that I didn’t know existed until a few months ago.
The ruins and the mountain views will surprise you. Consider booking a trip if you want to know a little bit more about Greek mythology and the start of a magnificent civilization.
Has to be one of the most underrated things to do in Athens Greece!
Here are some things to look out for when on the tour:
- Multilingual tour guide
- 10+ hour trip
- Wear good walking shoes
- Wear comfortable clothes
- Stay hydrated
- Bring money for food and drinks
- The bus stops for bathroom breaks
5. Visit the Temple of Zeus
The Temple of Zeus is nearly as iconic as the Acropolis and is pretty high on everyone’s list. Although I didn’t have time to visit the temple, I could see its beauty from my Airbnb in Athens.
It’s a wonder how many artifacts and ruins are still standing today.
That was my top 5 things to do in Athens Greece.
I hope you feel as inspired as I was when visiting Athens! I would recommend visiting all of these places.
