This historic town is one of the top locations in Virginia for a day trip and weekend getaway from Washington DC and other nearby cities.
There is no shortage of locally owned businesses and tourist attractions. So, here is a list of some of the most picturesque spots in Old Town Alexandria!
1. Old Town Alexandria Mural
This colorful mural is a hidden gem that takes some time to find. The mural is located in an alleyway on 106 North Lee Street beside a restaurant.
I wasn’t really looking for this particular mural, but I was so happy to come across it.
2. Historical Houses & Architecture
Everywhere you look in Alexandria, VA, there are old houses that many people still live in that make some of the best photo spots. Some of them are more colorful than others but these houses are charming and worth capturing.
Even during the holidays, some of the houses become even more stunning with unique decorations. For breathtaking house photos, visit during the cherry blossom season.
3. Hidden Alleyways
As I walked the streets in my heels, I was able to uncover many beautiful alleyways with brick and vines. The secret alleyways are perfect photo opportunities to capture the less popular sides of the town.
As a blogger, my mission is to inspire you to visit the less-known locations, so if you don’t want people in your photos, look for quaint alleyways.
4. Museums
The Carlyle House is an open attraction with a garden. After taking photos, learn about the history of the mansion house hospital. Access the house by paying a small admission fee. You can’t miss this mansion with its gorgeous architectural design.
5. Boardwalk
This boardwalk features beautiful views of the Potomac River. A perfect location for relaxing with friends after a long day of sightseeing.
There are also boat tours that you can take to capture more of Alexandria. It is recommended to book the tours in advance.
6. Waterfront Park
This unique waterfront park is a photographer’s dream and a staple attraction in Old Town Alexandria. Make sure to visit between March and November to see this exhibit.
7. Captains Row
Every part of Old Town Alexandria is Instagram-worthy. Many of the streets tend to be crowded due to events during the day.
If you want to take photos with fewer people, I would recommend visiting early in the morning.
I know my travels to Alexandria were super frustrating due to the traffic. It pays to do a little research on the best times to go.
If you’re looking for a place to take professional photos for events, Captains Row is one of the best places due to its colorful houses.
8. Donna Lewis Courtyard
Did you know that Donna Lewis Boutique has a courtyard for exploring? The entrance to the courtyard is adorned with a beautiful tunnel that makes you feel like you’re in another world.
9. Wilkes Tunnel
A tunnel for exploring and taking photos. The Wilkes Tunnel was an important railroad tunnel back in 1856 and is located on Wilkes and Royal Street.
Since there are lights inside the tunnel, you don’t have to worry about photos with bad lighting.
